GTA water hardness

"Hard" to "very hard" depending on the neighbourhood — we test your specific tap.

Lifespan lost to scale

Water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines die early. A softener can double water-heater life.

The hardness scale

Almost certainly, your water is hard.

Hardness is measured in grains per gallon. Below 3 gpg is soft. Above 7 is hard. Above 10 is where appliances start dying early — and where most of the GTA lives.

What it actually costs you

Hard water sends you a bill every month — you just don't see it.

Three places it shows up. Each one costs more than the softener does.

Appliances die 30–50% faster

Scale buildup destroys water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and faucets from the inside. A softener can double the life of your water heater alone.

Skin, hair, laundry actually feel different

Soap lathers properly for the first time in your house. Hair stops feeling like straw. Whites stop turning grey after ten washes.

Less soap, less salt than you think

Modern high-efficiency softeners use half the salt the old ones did. Less soap, less descaling, less Lime-Away — actual money back every month.

Not sure how hard your water actually is?

That's what the free in-home test is for. We measure hardness, iron, and chlorine at your tap, give you the numbers in writing, and show what an appropriately sized system would cost. You owe nothing.

Softeners aren't magic — they just need to be sized right.

BUT we're TSSA-licensed (FS-R-52162), insured, HRAI members, WSIB cleared. Most big-box softener horror stories come from under-sizing — regenerates too often, burns the resin, fails at year three — or bad install: bypass valve on backwards, no drain, overflow risk.

We size based on your actual test results and install to code. You get the numbers. You get the install. You get a softener that lasts 12+ years instead of 3.

Questions

Water softener FAQ

Is my water actually hard?

Almost certainly yes — most of the GTA runs 10–16 gpg. We measure at your tap free during the assessment so you know the exact number for your home.

Salt-based or salt-free?

Salt-based ion-exchange softeners genuinely remove hardness minerals — this is what's needed to protect your water heater and appliances. "Salt-free conditioners" change how scale deposits but don't soften. We'll explain the difference in plain English.

What size do I need?

Depends on household size, water usage, and hardness level. We size for a 7-day regeneration cycle — frequent enough to stay efficient, infrequent enough to not waste salt.

Do I have to add salt often?

Modern efficient softeners use a 40–50 lb bag every 4–6 weeks depending on use. We can add a salt-delivery plan if you don't want to hump bags down the basement stairs.

What does install cost?

Most installs land between $1,800 and $4,000, depending on the size and quality of the softener and the work required to tie into your main line. We test your water and quote in writing before any work starts — you see the number before you commit.

Own it or rent it — what are my options?

Both. Buy outright — you own the softener, only ongoing cost is salt. Rent from us — zero upfront cost, predictable monthly fee, full coverage (parts, labour, service, eventual replacement). We'll run both at the assessment.

Does it affect water pressure?

Minimal drop through a properly sized unit. If your pressure is already marginal we might recommend a booster — part of the assessment.

P.S.   Combine the softener install with a new tankless water heater and we'll discount both. Ask when you book.
