Reverse osmosis is a drinking-water solution—not a water softener.
An under-sink reverse-osmosis system uses staged pre-filtration and a membrane to reduce many dissolved substances before water reaches a dedicated drinking tap. The exact performance depends on the incoming water, membrane, filter stages, pressure and maintenance.
Hard-water scale throughout the home is a different problem. A water softener conditions the main water supply, while reverse osmosis is normally used for selected drinking and cooking water. Some homes benefit from one system; others use both for separate purposes.

RO forces water through a membrane after pre-filtration to reduce many dissolved substances. Performance and reduction claims depend on the exact certified system and incoming water.
Is reverse osmosis the same as soft water?
No. Reverse osmosis treats drinking water at a selected tap. A softener addresses hardness minerals in the main household water supply.
How often are RO filters changed?
The interval depends on the system, filter type, incoming water and usage. Follow the manufacturer schedule and replace filters when performance or water quality indicates service is due.
Does an RO system need a drain?
Most conventional systems use a drain connection for concentrate water. Installation also needs appropriate cabinet space, feed water and a dispensing faucet.
