Air-handler decisions start with airflow, not a cabinet size.
An air handler is the indoor side of many central heat-pump and air-conditioning systems. Its blower moves return air across an indoor coil, then sends conditioned air back through the ductwork. Depending on the selected design, controls and supplemental electric heat may also be part of the indoor system.
A proper match considers the outdoor equipment, required heating and cooling capacity, available electrical service, blower performance, filter arrangement, condensate drainage and the resistance created by the ducts. Reusing an indoor unit without confirming compatibility can leave comfort or airflow problems unresolved.
The air handler cannot repair undersized, restricted or poorly balanced ducts by itself. We review the complete air path and document any duct, electrical, drainage or control work needed before the equipment choice is finalized.

An air handler contains the indoor blower and coil used by many central heat-pump and air-conditioning systems. It circulates air through the equipment and the home's ductwork.
Is an air handler the same as a furnace?
No. A gas furnace creates heat with a burner and also moves air. An air handler primarily moves air across an indoor coil and may include supplemental electric heat when the system design calls for it.
Does an air handler need ductwork?
A central air handler normally serves a duct system. Homes without suitable ducts may be better candidates for a ductless heat-pump design.
Can I keep my existing air handler with a new heat pump?
Only when capacity, coil, refrigerant, blower, controls and published equipment compatibility all line up. The indoor and outdoor equipment should be checked as a complete system before either component is reused.
How is an air handler sized?
Selection considers the home's heating and cooling loads, the matched outdoor unit and the airflow the ducts can deliver. Floor area alone is not enough to finalize equipment.
